The Hoover Upright Vacuum Fights Back
Although the vacuum cleaner in one form or another was first unveiled in the 19th century, it wasn't until the early 20th Century that James Spangler came up with design for an electrical portable vacuum that anyone took much notice. In a stroke of good fortune, one of his first customers was a cousin whose husband, William Hoover embraced the idea and in collaboration with Spangler developed the vacuum cleaner.
In 1908, the first bag on a stick Hoover upright vacuum cleaner was patented and introduced to a sceptical world and not unusually, failed to set the world alight. Hoovers introduction of a 10 day free home trial meant that within a few years, there was a 'Hoover' in almost every household.
For the last hundred years, Hoover has been the vacuum cleaner of choice for most of the English speaking world.
